3M™ Privacy Filters

3M™ privacy filters - privacy starts with your screen

Advanced 3M™ technology protects your data from prying eyes. A clear view for you. A dark screen for everyone else. The microlouvre layer narrows the viewing angle to roughly 30° off-axis, so you can open a contract, a payroll sheet or a patient record on a train, in an open-plan office or at a client's desk. For a company it is a practical safeguard for personal data and trade secrets - reading a screen over someone's shoulder is the simplest kind of leak, and no firewall will stop it.

How filters differ between devices

The filter material itself is the same everywhere - 3M™ microlouvres. What changes is how the filter is attached and how you pick the size. Those are the two things buyers most often get wrong, so here is the short version.

Laptops and 2-in-1 devices

The standard is 3M™ COMPLY™ mounting: adhesive strips that stick to the bezel (never to the panel itself), or Flip Attach tabs that let you flip or remove the filter in one move and close the lid with it in place. Do not pick the size by diagonal alone - a 14-inch 16:9 screen is a completely different sheet from a 14-inch 16:10. We also stock frameless (Edge-to-Edge) models that cover the whole glass front. Every laptop filter we sell keeps the touchscreen working.

Monitors

On monitors with a bezel the filter is held by slide mounts and attachment strips; on full-screen panels it uses the magnetic 3M™ COMPLY™ system - you place the filter against a thin magnetic frame and lift it off in a second, for instance when presenting to your team. Sizes go up to 49 inches, including 21:9 ultrawide. Here too the diagonal only matters together with the aspect ratio: 24 inches in 16:9 and in 16:10 are different widths and heights.

Tablets

Tablet filters are cut for specific models - iPad or Surface - because the bezel width and camera position matter as much as the diagonal. All of them keep full touch and gesture support, so the device behaves exactly as it does without a filter. The mounting is removable: fit the filter when you travel, take it off when you do not need it.

Accessories and mounts

3M™ COMPLY™ mounting kits - adhesive strips, Flip Attach tabs, monitor slide mounts - are sold separately. They are what you need when you move a filter to a new device, or when the original mounting has worn out. The filter itself stays usable; only the mounting hardware is replaced.

Questions people ask before buying

Working at a monitor fitted with a 3M™ privacy filter in an open-plan office - the screen is readable only head-on
How do I choose the right filter size?

You need two things: the screen diagonal and its aspect ratio (usually 16:9, 16:10 or 3:2). The diagonal alone is not enough - a 14-inch 16:10 screen is taller and narrower than a 14-inch 16:9, so a filter chosen by inches only will not cover the panel. The safest method is to measure the active screen area itself (width and height in millimetres) and compare it with the dimensions listed on the product page. If you are unsure, send us your device model and we will check it for you.

Does a privacy filter work with a touchscreen?

Every laptop and tablet filter we sell keeps touch, gestures and stylus input working - the microlouvre layer is thin enough not to interfere with the touch panel. For monitors, touch compatibility applies only to selected models, simply because most office monitors are not touch-enabled. Touch compatibility is listed in the specification of every product.

Can the filter be removed?

Yes, all of our filters are removable. On laptops the 3M™ COMPLY™ mounting adheres to the bezel rather than to the panel, so you can take the filter out and put it back without leaving marks on the screen. On full-screen monitors the filter is held magnetically and comes off in a second. That is handy when you want to show something to a colleague - you simply set the filter aside.

What is the difference between a privacy filter and an anti-glare filter?

They do two different jobs and are easy to confuse. A privacy filter narrows the viewing angle: the person sitting in front sees the screen, while anyone looking from the side sees black. An anti-glare coating only reduces reflections and offers no protection against onlookers. 3M™ privacy filters do have a matte side that reduces glare as a side effect, but we do not carry a separate anti-glare-only product line.

Do the filters fit curved screens?

3M™ filters are rigid, flat sheets designed for flat panels. On a curved screen they will not sit flush, so we do not recommend them for curved monitors. An ultrawide format is not a problem in itself - we do stock 21:9 filters - as long as the panel is flat. If you are not sure, send us your monitor model before you order.

Does a filter make the screen darker?

Every privacy filter reduces brightness slightly - that is the unavoidable cost of narrowing the viewing angle. Models with Bright Screen technology let through noticeably more light than standard filters, and in normal office work the difference is barely noticeable. If you work with graphics or in bright light, choose those - they carry the Bright Screen marking in the product name.
